New London Landmarks 1976—2011
As we look toward 2012, we can see new challenges and changes ahead as a new Mayor begins a new administration in the city. Change is a long process, and mayor Daryl Finizio, with a new vision ofr New London, will set the pace and direction for the change most voters called for when they went to the polls.
Since 1976 NLL has tackled challenges and met our goals:
- Historic buildings are renovated and / or restored.
- 12 neighborhoods and 26 individual sites are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
- Design Guideines are in place to review development in downtown.
- Over 250 homes display our popular Whale Plaques.
- Renovation of the historic Parade creates a new center for downtown.
The Shaw Mansion, the Custom House Maritine Museum, the Hempstead Houses and the Nathan Hale Schoolhouse attract thousands of visitors and interest in Cultural Tourism is expanding rapidly.
Value New London! For too many years the city has undervalued itself!
Recently completed studies represent approximately $200,000 worth of professional planning by experts in their field.
It is now the responsibility of the new city government to begin implementation of these ideas.
Yes... they require significant funding, but more importantly, they require a positive approach to change!
- Neighborhood Planning Strategy, October 2010.
- Re-Connect New London, 2010.
- The Role of Riverside Park in New London's Future, 2010.
- Hyett-Palma Downtown Action Agenda Update, 2011.
- Fort Trumbull Action Agenda, 2011.
Future New London
The city can now think in terms of 4-to-8-to-12 year planning, based on these excellent studies. The new administration takes on many challenges...
...with the goal of creating a vibrant historic city -- which will be the result of long-term visions and many small steps taken with clearly identified goals.
